Volunteer the second Saturday of each month for stewardship day at War Bluff Valley Sanctuary in Pope County, north of Golconda off State Route 146. War Bluff Valley Sanctuary, almost 500 acres in size, is located in Pope County, and nearly surrounded by the Shawnee National Forest. Illinois Audubon owns and manages the area. Shawnee Chapter of Illinois Audubon oversees the management. http://shawneeaudubon.org/ http://warbluffvalleysanctuary.org/?page_id=7 To reach the sanctuary, go 3.5 miles north of Golconda on St. Rt. 146 to Bushwhack Road (look for Wildlife Viewing Area signs); turn left and follow Bushwhack Road for 2 miles to sanctuary entrance. Bring work gloves, drink, and sack lunch.
