This is a Volksmarch event which evolved from public races in southern Germany that still take place today. Custer State Park continues this European tradition each year. Participants walk 6.2 miles (on their own) through various park habitats. The trail begins at the parking area of the east end of the French Creek Natural Area. Participants will walk approximately a 6-mile loop. Gradual uphill first 3 miles and gradual downhill last 3 miles. Total of 3 creek crossings that tend to have flowing water in the spring of the year and by mid-June to July are dry. Pasture and mixed forest habitat with scenic vistas the first half of hike. The second half of the trail descends into the riparian French Creek Natural Area and loops back to the parking area. Walk box and check-in located at the Peter Norbeck Visitor Center. Info: 605-255-4464.
