As we celebrate the Centennial of the National Park Service on August 25th, think about why parks are important to you. Read! what Cheyenne Roundtree from Beacon Heights Elementary, one of our Buddy Bison Schools, shared with the White House yesterday.
In partnership with NIPSCO, NPT has acquired 30 acres of land surrounding the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Visitor Center. The land will be donated to NPS this September. Read More.

Fall is here! Some kids are seeing beautiful colors while others are looking forward to cooler temperatures after the hot summer. What a great time to visit a park! Even though all national parks are closed due to the federal government shutdown, it is still a good time to discover local and state parks in your community. Read about our trips with Buddy Bison students this year and send us photos of your park experiences.
Get out and go!
A Visit from Nature
This month 5th grade students from Jose de Diego Community Academy in Chicago, IL got a special visit from me and Sara Rose, a naturalist from the Forest Preserve of Cook County’s Trailside Museum. Sara taught the students about the food web using real animal skulls and pelts. What a memorable way to learn about local animals and plants! Here is what Astry said about the visit:
I learned lots of new things that I have always wondered about. I have had a very cool experience with skulls and noticed that squirrels have teeth just like beavers to bite on hard nuts.
A big Buddy Bison thanks to our partner Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP for sponsoring Jose de Diego Community Academy this year.
Timonium Elementary (pictured with Ranger Abbi above) in Maryland welcomed me to the kick-off of their 100-Book Challenge Program for this school year. The program encourages independent reading, both at home and in school. Their theme for the year is "Our National Parks"; students will read about Fort McHenry, Hampton National Historic Site, Mammoth Cave, and Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Glacier National Parks. As an official Buddy Bison school, Timonium Elementary will learn about conservation and the importance of enjoying and preserving our parks. We look forward to hearing about their books and park adventures.
Summer Vacation to Grand Canyon and Zion National Parks
Rachel, a 2nd-grade student at Beauvoir, the National Cathedral Elementary School in Washington D.C. took me on an adventure of a lifetime this past summer. Here is what she wrote:
I went to Grand Canyon and Zion National Parks with my family and Buddy Bison. I saw lots of elk in the fields next to our cabin in the park. The view was fantastic and I loved it. When I looked down from the top on the Grand Canyon it felt awesome. When I was in Zion I saw the emerald pools that had such blue water with a rock in the middle that looked like a giant clam. Buddy had a great time traveling with us.
Thanks for taking me to these great parks Rachel! Are you going to a park today? Send us your photos and stories to email@example.com. We may feature you in Buddy Bison’s Buzz.
Federal Shutdown :(
Have you or your school been affected by the federal government shutdown and the closure of all national parks? Have you found state, local or regional parks to explore instead? Share your stories with us and you may be featured in next month's Buddy Bison's Buzz.
Congratulations to this month's Adventurer of the Month, Joseph (right) and the Stewart family from Illinois! Over the summer, Joseph and I had fun celebrating Memorial Day at the historic Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, IN. We also went to Lake Castle Rock in Friendship, WI and attended a wedding at Buckely Homestead County Park in Lowell, IN.
Joseph said, "My Great Aunt Myra and Uncle Tom sent Buddy to live with us. We take him everywhere we go. Brookfield Zoo was my favorite Buddy adventure. We got to see real bison just like Buddy!"
As our new Adventurer of the Month, Joseph will receive our Buddy Bison Prize package which includes a Buddy Bison, a Buddy Bison T-shirt and official certificate. If you would like to be considered as our next Adventurer of the Month, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
