Brianna Williams and Wrayzene Willouhby

Two sixth grade students, Wrayzene Willouhby and Brianna Williams from KIPP WILL DC Academy, a Buddy Bison partner school, impressed the guests at the Vento award gathering with their reflections on the Buddy Bison program. Brianna talked about her National Kids to Parks Day adventures, “With the Buddy Bison program I went on a hike with my mom and my aunt. We went to the Mason Neck State Park and learned how to read maps and how to survive in the wilderness. We even met Big Foot who taught us not to leave any trash behind. The hike gave my family and me, the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors more and to take every opportunity to exercise.  Now, I keep Buddy Bison near me to remind me to explore all of our beautiful parks. “ Wrayzene more

Help NPT Support Three Important Land Preservation Projects

NPT has partnered with the Trust for Public Land to preserve important privately owned parcels within three of our nation’s national park units. NPT is working to acquire one of the largest remaining inholdings within Glacier National Park in Montana as well as a critical inholding at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield in Georgia, in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. NPT is also working to protect property within California’s Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area  – an important open space resource for the Los Angeles area.  Please reach out to your members of Congress and ask them to support these projects through the Land and Water Conservation Fund in the FY2012 budget. People and Places Worth Noting

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2011 Sheldon Coleman Great Outdoors Award, the recreation community's most prestigious award: U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, White House Council on Environmental Quality Chair, Nancy Sutley and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator, Lisa Jackson. "The selection of shared recipients for the award, created in 1989, is unprecedented and reflects widespread enthusiasm within the recreation community for the unity and focus the four Cabinet-rank officials of the Obama Administration have provided to national recreation policy through the America's Great Outdoors Initiative," more

We would also like to recognize Virginia State Parks and Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. Both celebrate their 75th anniversaries this year. In 1936, Virginia was the first state in the country to launch its own park system, and today boasts 35 parks.
