Recently, the National Capital Region has made a conscious effort to do more joint outings to facilitate new bonds and camaraderie among the participants in the DC area.  With the help of the National Park Trust, the Washington DC program was honored to lead a float trip on the Potomac River!  Programs represented in this outing included Washington DC, Ft. Belvoir, La Plata, Fredrick, Ft. Mede, Quantico, Delaware, and Walter Reed/Bethesda.

The Potomac River and Harpers Ferry area have great fishing and are managed by national parks, making them a good match for Project Healing Waters and National Park Trusts collaboration. Local fly shop White Fly Outfitters facilitated a cadre of guides, and local chow from Billy’s BBQ (Gerrardstown, WV) ensured all were well-fed after a successful day of fishing.

The Potomac has experienced very low water and hot weather this summer.  Thanks to the expert local guides, we got an early start to the day, and everyone still caught some fish.  The target species in this area is smallmouth bass, but a few participants were surprised to catch some catfish on the fly!  One participant managed to catch an absolute HOG right off the start – this fish was taped at just under 23 inches!

Thank you to the National Park Trust for another great year of partnership with the DC program. We look forward to sharing the results of our upcoming regional trip to Harmans Cabins in WV in December, thanks to your continued support.
