Reeling in Memories: A Family Fishing Day at Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary
On Saturday, October 26th, families from the Channel Islands area gathered for a memorable fishing outing at the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, hosted by National Park Trust, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and NOAA Fisheries. This event marked the final fishing excursion of the year with these partners, blending outdoor adventure with marine conservation education in one of California’s most stunning natural landscapes.
Participants arrived early in the morning, with the crisp ocean air and the sun rising over the Channel Islands creating the perfect backdrop for the day ahead. Representatives from Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and NOAA Fisheries gave an engaging introduction to the sanctuary, highlighting its rich biodiversity and the importance of sustainable fishing practices. With that knowledge in hand, families boarded the fishing charter, eager to explore the waters and catch a glimpse of the area’s marine life.
As the charter ventured out, participants were treated to breathtaking views of the islands and their surrounding waters, spotting sea lions basking on the rocks and glimpsing dolphins swimming along the boat. Once at the fishing spots, everyone learned how to hook bait and cast their lines under the guidance of seasoned anglers. The excitement was palpable as over 100 fish were caught throughout the day, from various species that call the sanctuary home.
The day was more than just about fishing—it was about fostering a connection to the marine environment. Kids and their families had the opportunity to take home their catch and the fishing gear to continue their adventures in the future. With each cast, participants gained a deeper understanding of the ecosystem and the importance of protecting it.
This event at Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary was the last of five fishing events held in national marine sanctuaries across the country in 2024. Funded by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, these events provided opportunities for elementary-aged students, along with their families, to experience the joy of fishing while learning about marine conservation. The partnership with NOAA Fisheries and National Park Trust continues to foster appreciation for these invaluable protected areas, encouraging sustainable practices for the future of our oceans.
