This past weekend, on October 19, 2024, nine students embarked on a memorable outing to Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve. Participants came from a variety of majors and hometowns, gathering to enjoy nature at this local gem just a short distance from campus.

The outing, which focused on hiking, took us through multiple trailheads, covering a total distance of about two and a half miles. The preserve was the perfect setting for our first outing of the year, as it boasts a wide variety of mixed hardwoods, providing an ideal environment for learning some local tree identification—a critical skill for our forestry program.

We couldn’t have asked for better weather. It was one of those perfect fall days, with a gentle breeze and the first signs of the leaves changing colors. Everyone felt excited to be outdoors, soaking in the sights and sounds of the forest. For many, it was their first time visiting this beautiful location so close to campus.

One standout moment from the hike came when ambassador Chris shared his extensive knowledge of trees with the group. We came across a Sassafras tree, and Chris handed out leaves for everyone to crush, releasing the tree’s distinct, sweet smell. It was an interesting experience that added to the day’s excitement.

Beyond hiking, this outing was an opportunity to connect with fellow students in a relaxed, stress-free environment. We left with new friends, a deeper appreciation for the beauty of nature, and a fresh start to the weekend. It’s always special spending time outdoors, and we look forward to many adventures like this one.
