When the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) asked us to assist in protecting a viewshed in Virginia in 2022, we understood the importance of moving quickly.
Project Details:
Project Years: 2022 – Present
Parcel Size: 122 acres
Project Cost: $355,000
Overview
Some of the major attractions for hikers along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (AT) are the stunning views along much of the 2,194 miles they traverse.
So in 2022, when asked to assist the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) in protecting one such viewshed in Virginia, we understood the importance of moving quickly. The USFS wanted to purchase 122 acres of land alongside the Trail but could not meet the owner’s time frame. Therefore, the land was at risk of being sold to a private entity.
In September of 2024, we stepped in and purchased the land with funds from our Treasure Forever Revolving Fund. We will steward the property until the USFS can purchase it from us allowing us to use the sale proceeds to fund more land acquisition projects.
The AT is unique in that, though there are many owners of lands in and along the trail, it is a unit of the National Park System. It was conceived in 1921, completed in 1937, and designated in 1968 as one of the first national scenic trails. It runs through 14 states, from Mt. Katahdin, Maine, to Springer Mountain, Georgia. The AT is noteworthy in that it is one of the longest “hiker-only” trails in the world.
Why This Place Matters
Once this parcel is transferred, it will be stewarded by the USFS, preserving a natural buffer for the Trail that preserves the wild and historic views that hikers have enjoyed for more than 120 years.
Significance of the Acquisition:
- – Expands the size of the AT corridor, widening buffer land.
- – Adds more land into the public sector for access.
- – Adds scenic viewpoints and increases protected natural spaces to the Appalachian Trail.
