On February 8, 2025, CSUSB Adventure partnered with the Student Assistance in Learning (SAIL) Program for an enriching hike to Round Valley in the San Jacinto Wilderness. The SAIL Program, a TRIO Student Support Services grant, has been dedicated to increasing college retention and graduation rates among targeted undergraduate students at CSUSB since 1981.

This collaborative outdoor recreation outing brought together 15 participants from both programs, eager to explore the high-altitude trails of Mount San Jacinto. After ascending via the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to the Mountain Station, the group embarked on a scenic hike through the forest, culminating at Round Valley. Along the way, participants enjoyed breathtaking mountain views, crisp alpine air, and engaging conversations.

The partnership with the SAIL Program was initiated to provide their students—many of whom are first-generation, low-income, or have disabilities—with unique opportunities to engage in outdoor activities that promote personal growth and community building. The hike offered a balanced mix of challenge and enjoyment, catering to both novice and seasoned hikers.

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciations for the chance to disconnect from daily routines and immerse themselves in nature. Standout moments included the ride up to the Mountain Station which provided stunning views of Coachella Valley and would love to mention the out of world experience going from Beauty of the Desert to the Tranquility of Mt San Jacinto Park with its luscious pine forest giving a sense of peace and comfort.

This joint venture underscored the value of collaboration between campus programs in fostering student development and well-being. By facilitating access to natural spaces and encouraging outdoor exploration, the event also aligned with the mission of the National Park Trust, which is to “preserve parks today and create park stewards for tomorrow.” Such experiences are vital in inspiring the next generation to appreciate and protect our nation’s natural treasures.

We look forward to future partnerships and adventures that continue to enrich the CSUSB community.
