On a cool April morning, National Park Trust partnered with the Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP) for a day of exploration, creativity, and connection at Indiana Dunes National Park.

The day began with participants arriving and being warmly welcomed as they learned about the park’s rich history and unique landscape—home to the iconic sand dunes, diverse ecosystems, and miles of shoreline along Lake Michigan.

From there, the group set out on a guided hike, venturing through peaceful marshes and scenic inland trails. The crisp air and natural beauty offered a refreshing backdrop for families and veterans alike to slow down, connect, and take in the surroundings.

After the hike, participants gathered for lunch, sharing stories and enjoying time together before transitioning into the day’s creative activity. Guided by a local Indiana artist, two large murals had been outlined in advance, inspired by the sweeping dunes and landscapes of the park. Veterans and their families brought the murals to life with color, each brushstroke reflecting personal expression and a shared appreciation for the outdoors.

As the day came to a close, it ended not just with finished artwork, but with hugs, laughter, and a renewed connection—to one another and to the park itself.

This partnership highlighted the powerful role public lands can play in fostering community, healing, and creativity. Through experiences like these, participants are not only encouraged to explore our national parks, but to form lasting memories and deeper connections within them.
