Fort Sumter, Ferry Boat Ride and Tour
Our trip to Charleston on April 23rd was one of those days that reminded us how valuable it is to step outside of the classroom and experience history firsthand. We all met at the school early in the morning and departed around 8:45 a.m., excited for a day that would combine learning, exploration, and a little bit of adventure. After a smooth ride, we arrived about 30 minutes early, giving us enough time to get organized, check in, and make sure all 18 participants were ready to go.
Once we boarded the ferry, the energy immediately shifted. While there were seats available inside, most of the group chose to head outside and take in the views. For many of the students, this was their first time on a ferry boat, which made the experience even more exciting. As the boat moved through the water, a guide pointed out landmarks and shared interesting facts along the way. Between the narration, the breeze, and the open water, it was the perfect introduction to what would be a memorable day.

When we arrived at Fort Sumter, we had about 45 minutes to an hour to explore. The site offered a powerful glimpse into history, with preserved structures, historical artifacts, and informational displays that told the story of the Civil War and the fort’s significance. Park rangers were available to answer questions and even provided recommendations for other nearby historical sites that could be great options for future trips. There was also a live demonstration happening during our visit, which added another layer to the experience. In addition, the museum on-site gave students the opportunity to dive deeper into the history, reading and learning at their own pace.

The weather truly worked in our favor. It wasn’t too hot or too windy—just a comfortable breeze that made being outdoors even more enjoyable. The ferry itself was packed with visitors, which showed just how popular and meaningful this destination is.
Around 12:30 p.m., we boarded the ferry again to head back. The return trip was just as smooth and enjoyable, giving everyone time to relax and reflect on what they had seen and learned. Once we made it back, the group decided to grab lunch together.
Overall, the trip was a success. There were plenty of laughs, meaningful conversations, and new experiences shared throughout the day. It was not only a great learning opportunity but also a chance to enjoy the outdoors, try something new, and create lasting memories.
