Hampton University Explores the Chesapeake by Kayak
On April 25th, 2026, Hampton University’s National Park Trust College Ambassadors hosted an unforgettable outdoor recreation outing at First Landing State Park. Eight participants joined us for an exciting kayaking dolphin tour in the Chesapeake Bay, guided by Chesapean Outdoors.

The experience combined adventure, education, and a unique opportunity to connect with nature in a truly memorable way. We chose this outing because many of our peers had never experienced kayaking before, and even fewer had seen dolphins in the wild. It felt like the perfect way to introduce something new while highlighting the beauty and biodiversity of our local waterways. As we paddled through the bay, we not only got a light workout but also learned about the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem and its wildlife. The energy throughout the outing was incredible. Participants were thrilled from the moment we launched our kayaks, and their excitement only grew when dolphins began to appear around us. For many, this was their first time kayaking and their first time seeing dolphins up close, making the experience even more special.

One standout moment that had everyone laughing was when a dolphin surfaced right beside one of our kayaks and accidentally sprayed a participant while coming up for air. This was an unexpected and unforgettable interaction! Overall, the outing felt like a huge success. It was rewarding to see participants step out of their comfort zones, try something new, and leave with a deeper appreciation for outdoor recreation.

Many shared that they couldn’t wait to go kayaking again. Beyond the fun, we were also able to spread awareness about the National Park Trust College Ambassador Program, with some participants expressing interest in applying for the 2026–2027 academic year. The National Park Trust played a crucial role in making this outing possible by supporting us through the planning process, providing funding, and ensuring we had the resources needed for a safe and impactful experience. Opportunities like this remove barriers and allow students to explore nature in meaningful ways. This outing was a perfect reminder of how powerful outdoor experiences can be in building confidence, community, and a lasting connection to the natural world.
