Last weekend, a group of Philander Smith University students and I spent a beautiful day
kayaking at Murray Lake. Thanks to the incredible team at Rock Town River Outfitters, everyone who participated was thoroughly educated on kayaking etiquette and taught how to be as safe as possible. As college ambassadors for National Park Trust, we were thrilled to help organize this outdoor experience, encourage more students to connect with nature beyond campus, and participate in this unique experience along with everyone else.

The weather was pretty cloudy, but not bad with calm water, and just enough breeze to keep things cool. For many of us, it was our first time kayaking, but the Rock Town guides made sure everyone felt confident and safe. We paddled against the wind to avoid flowing into a dam, and we were able to see Pinnacle Mountain, countless aquatic plants, and even a few herons. Between laughter, a few friendly races, and even some collisions, we learned how teamwork and patience can make outdoor adventures even more rewarding.

This trip reminded me why programs like the National Park Trust’s College Ambassador initiative matter. They inspire students to explore, protect, and appreciate natural spaces while building community. Kayaking at Murray Lake wasn’t just about paddling; it was about connection: to nature, to friends, and to ourselves. On to the next adventure!
