AAMU’s Bulldogs in the Wild: Camping at Ditto Landing

This past weekend, we took 35 students out into the wild for an unforgettable overnight camping trip at Ditto Landing through the National Park Trust Program. The goal? To disconnect from the everyday routine, connect with nature, and create lasting memories under the stars. And while the experience definitely delivered on adventure, it also threw us a curveball—the cold.
The Setup
We made sure everyone was well-equipped with plenty of tents, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads to ensure a comfortable night outdoors. As the sun hovered in the mid-60s during the day, the weather felt manageable with a light jacket or coat. Spirits were high as music played through the campsite, setting the perfect tone for some classic line dances, games, and much-needed social time. The bonfire became the heart of the camp, drawing everyone together as we shared stories, laughter, and good vibes deep into the night.

The Cold Reality
Despite being forewarned about the unpredictable spring weather, nothing quite prepared us for just how brutal the nighttime temperatures would get. The thermometer dipped below 30 degrees, transforming our peaceful retreat into an endurance challenge. Some campers toughed it out, bundled in layers, while others understandably tapped out and retreated indoors.
To make sure everyone was safe, we unlocked the vans, giving students the option to sleep inside if the temperatures became unbearable—which a handful of participants ultimately did. Those who braved the cold? Well, they earned some serious bragging rights.
The Morning After
After a frigid night, a warm, hearty breakfast was exactly what we needed. We served up Cajun cheese grits with Conecuh sausage, complemented by granola bars, muffins, breakfast cakes, and a variety of fresh fruit to help everyone recharge before breaking camp. The morning sunlight brought renewed energy, and despite the challenges, the group left with a shared sense of accomplishment and a few stories to tell.

Lessons Learned & Looking Ahead
This trip was a prime example of why preparation is key when dealing with unpredictable weather—but even then, nature always has the last word. Still, the experience was rewarding, proving that outdoor adventures come with both highs and lows. And for those who stuck it out, this will be a camping trip to remember. As we continue to grow the Bulldogs in the Wild program, we’re excited to plan more outdoor experiences, pushing boundaries, embracing nature, and building a stronger community through shared adventures.
Would we do it again? Absolutely. But next time, we’ll be even more prepared for Mother Nature’s surprises.
