Anchored in Nature: A Day of Discovery and Fishing for Military Families
On July 20th, 2025, we launched the first of five outings within the National Marine Sanctuary network, part of a new nationwide initiative to connect military families with the wonders of our nation’s protected marine areas.
In partnership with the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and NOAA Fisheries, we welcomed active duty service members and veteran families for a day of hands-on education, ocean exploration, and sustainable fishing off California’s Pacific Coast.
The day kicked off at the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center in Santa Cruz. There, families engaged in interactive exhibits and learned about the importance of sustainable fishing practices, marine conservation, and the ecological and cultural history of the Monterey Bay area. Kids and adults enjoyed a hands-on tour of the center, gaining a deeper understanding of the wildlife and ecosystems that make this sanctuary unique.

After, the group traveled to the harbor to board a fishing charter and set out into the sanctuary waters. Lines were cast, and soon participants were reeling in a variety of local rockfish species of all shapes, sizes, and colors.

As the boats returned to shore, families had their fresh catches cleaned and filleted, ready to take home and enjoy as a delicious reminder of the day’s adventure.
We are proud to work alongside these incredible partners to offer unique, meaningful outdoor experiences for our nation’s military communities. Outings like these not only connect families to our public waters but also help foster a lifelong appreciation for marine conservation and recreation.
