Over a long weekend of crisp coastal air, forested trails, and flowing streams, participants across the Northeast joined Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing for an unforgettable three-night camping and fly fishing trip to Acadia National Park.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Maine’s rugged coastline and granite peaks, the trip offered veterans a chance to reconnect with nature and with one another. From the moment tents were pitched, the group embraced the spirit of the outdoors, learning, exploring, and casting lines in one of the most beautiful public lands in the country.

National Park Service rangers shared their knowledge of Acadia’s unique ecosystems and history throughout the trip. Participants received America the Beautiful passes for veterans, opening the door to even more outdoor exploration in the future. A ranger-led ecology session focused on the park’s diverse wildlife, with a special lesson on the hauntingly beautiful calls of the common loon, a bird native to Acadia’s lakes.

The group laced up their hiking boots for a guided hike to Hunter’s Beach, led by volunteers from Trout Unlimited. Along the way, they learned about bass species that inhabit Acadia’s streams, deepening their understanding of the waters they’d soon fish.

As the sun began to set each evening, participants cast their lines into Acadia’s serene streams and lakes. Whether seasoned anglers or first-timers, everyone found moments of peace, joy, and camaraderie as they fished side by side. The final day was fully immersed in fly fishing across the park, with the landscape offering both challenge and reward.

This trip was a powerful reminder of how time in nature can heal, inspire, and unite people. We’re grateful to our partners for making this experience possible, and to the veterans who continue to show us the strength of community and the value of outdoor connection.
