On a cool morning off the coast of California, families boarded a boat bound for Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, excitement buzzing as they prepared for a day on the water. With rods in hand and ocean breezes in the air, the adventure ahead promised the thrill of fishing and the joy of shared experiences in one of the nation’s most unique marine environments.

The Channel Islands, often called the “Galápagos of North America,” are home to an incredible variety of wildlife, from playful sea lions to migrating whales and thriving fish populations beneath the waves. As boats drifted, anglers dropped their lines with anticipation. Before long, the tug of a catch brought cheers across the deck. For many participants, this was their first time fishing, making each line pull and glimpse of a colorful rockfish a moment of wonder.

The goal was for families to learn about sustainable fishing practices, the importance of healthy marine ecosystems, and how these waters connect to larger conservation efforts. The day was about more than catching fish, it was about forging connections: between people and the ocean, generations, and communities and public lands.

By afternoon, everyone had catches ready to be enjoyed at home. Just as importantly, families left with a deeper understanding of the natural treasures found in the Channel Islands and their role in protecting them for future generations.

We’re proud to support opportunities like these, where time on the water becomes time spent together, creating memories, building stewardship, and ensuring that public lands and waters are for everyone to enjoy.
