This past November, Marines participating in the Single Marine Program (SMP) embarked on a weekend of adventure, camaraderie, and outdoor exploration at Joshua Tree National Park in California.

The group arrived from three different bases, Miramar, Twenty-Nine Palms, and Yuma, and kicked off the trip with opening programming before heading into the park for lunch and an afternoon of hiking. Participants explored Joshua Tree’s unique desert landscape through caving and rock scrambling, taking on challenges that encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and connection with the land.

That evening, the group settled into camp for dinner and gathered around the fire for a fireside chat complete with s’mores. As night fell, participants took part in a star talk, learning about the desert night sky and enjoying the quiet beauty of the park after dark.

The following morning, after breaking camp, the group returned to the trails to hike the Hall of Horrors and cap off the trip with rock climbing.

The weekend offered Marines a chance to challenge themselves, build camaraderie, and experience Joshua Tree in a meaningful and memorable way.
