On March 28th, we set out for another incredible outdoor adventure, this time heading to Oyster Point for a weekend filled with exploration, history, and unforgettable experiences.

Friday Evening: Settling In and Sunset Views
After arriving at Oyster Point, we wasted no time setting up camp before making our way down to the water. The sunset painted the sky with breathtaking colors, providing a peaceful start to our trip. As night fell, we gathered around the fire to make quesadillas—a campsite favorite—before diving into games and laughter under the stars.

Saturday: A Rare Eclipse and Island Adventures
The next morning, we were up early, greeted by a partial solar eclipse as we cooked breakfast—a surreal way to start the day. With a full day of adventure ahead, we packed up and made our way to Harkers Island, where we met Park Ranger Sabrina, who would guide us through some of the most fascinating spots along the coast.

Our first stop was Shackleford Banks, where we hiked across the island, spotting the famous wild horses that roam freely. As we explored, Sabrina shared the island’s history, including stories about an old whaling settlement and even a bizarre legal case where someone stole a foal and faced federal charges, as the horses are protected as strictly as bald eagles. Before leaving, we spent time shelling along the shore, collecting unique treasures the tide had left behind.

Next, we took the ferry to Cape Lookout, where we paused for lunch before diving into the island’s rich history. Sabrina guided us through the ruins of a previous lighthouse, giving us a glimpse into the past before we made our way to the current Cape Lookout Lighthouse and keeper’s quarters. Standing beneath the towering black-and-white landmark was the perfect way to close out our coastal excursion.

Saturday Evening & Sunday: Rest, Games, and Heading Home
After returning to Oyster Point, we fully embraced the relaxed atmosphere, napping in hammocks under the warm spring sun. As night fell, we enjoyed a simple but satisfying ramen dinner, followed by a lively game of charadesaround the campfire.

The next morning, we packed up our campsite and made the journey back to Chapel Hill, tired but fulfilled. This trip was a perfect blend of adventure, education, and relaxation, leaving us with lasting memories and an even greater appreciation for the beauty and history of North Carolina’s coast.
Until the next adventure!
