From Backstage to Brushstrokes: A Day of Art and Exploration
In late March, partnered with the National Military Family Association, National Park Trust welcomed local military families from across the DMV area for a day of exploration, creativity, and connection at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts—a unique national park where nature and the arts come together.

The day began with a special behind-the-scenes experience at the iconic Filene Center. Families were treated to a private backstage tour led in partnership with the National Park Service, offering a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a world-class performance venue. From stage setup to production logistics, participants learned how concerts and performances are brought to life throughout the year. For many, it was their first time seeing what happens beyond the curtain—and it sparked curiosity and appreciation for the countless moving pieces that make each show possible.
After the tour, families gathered for lunch, taking time to relax, connect, and enjoy the beautiful park surroundings. The afternoon shifted from performance to personal expression, as families headed outdoors for a guided nature painting session. Led by a local artist, participants of all ages were encouraged to slow down, observe their environment, and capture the beauty of Wolf Trap through their own creative lens.

Creativity and fresh air filled the space as families painted scenes inspired by the park and the peaceful atmosphere that makes Wolf Trap so special. The activity not only fostered artistic expression but also created a meaningful opportunity for families to connect with nature and each other.
This outing was a powerful reminder of the importance of accessible outdoor experiences—especially for military families who often face unique challenges and transitions. By blending arts, nature, and community, the day offered something for everyone and highlighted the diverse ways our national parks can be experienced.

We are so grateful to our partners, the National Park Service, the National Military Family Assocation and the incredible families who joined us for making this day so memorable. We look forward to continuing to create spaces where families can explore, learn, and connect—both with the outdoors and with one another.
