On Friday, October 4th, Cydnie and I (Jada) hosted an exciting collaborative outing between our club, Brownies Outdoors, and the Eva C. Mitchell Childhood Development Center. Held on Hampton University’s scenic waterfront, the event brought together around 25 participants, including 10 children from ECM, 10 members of Brownies Outdoors, and about 5 teachers and parents.

We kicked off the day with a lively reading of “Jada’s Journey Under the Sea,” written by Dr. Jeanette Davis from Hampton’s Marine and Environmental Science Department. Afterward, the children got up close with fascinating marine animals we found in the Hampton River, many of which were featured in the book. Thanks to the department, we had everything needed to catch these creatures, which included mole crabs, shrimp, and oysters. Following the “show and tell,” the kids joined Brownies Outdoors members at the arts and crafts table to paint rocks, adding their creative touch to the day.

Before leaving, they received coloring books, snacks, and memories to take back to daycare. The waterfront was the perfect location, offering ample space and proximity to the daycare and oyster cages. Seeing the children’s enthusiasm for wildlife and learning was heartwarming, and many participants expressed interest in future events. One young boy even shouted, “Oxygen!” when asked what the ocean provides—an impressive response!

Overall, this outing was an inspiring experience. The kids learned about marine life while enjoying nature, and our members gained valuable exposure to working with children. We can’t wait to do it again!
