Harlem Globetrotters and Buddy Bison Bring the Fun: A Day With KABOOM!

The excitement was palpable as two Harlem Globetrotters, “Moose” and “Torch,” kicked off this first community play-filled event in support of the CDC Foundation’s National Challenge to End Hunger and Build Healthy Communities, in partnership with KABOOM!. They were joined by a host of VIPs and enthusiastic kids from M. Agnes Jones Elementary, one of our Buddy Bison Schools supported by the Georgia-Pacific Foundation.

Before the festivities began, Buddy Bison had a special meet and greet with the students as they arrived at the YMCA of Metro Atlanta. The kids also had the chance to play games and enjoy activities before the official program started, adding even more fun to the day.

As the Globetrotters made their grand entrance, they set the stage for a morning filled with fun and inspiration. Lysa Ratliff, CEO of KABOOM!, welcomed all the kids and parents, emphasizing the importance of play in fostering healthy communities. Other speakers included Lauren Koontz, Executive Director of the YMCA of Metro Atlanta, Dr. Karen Hacker, CDC National Director of Chronic Diseases and Prevention, followed by USDA Deputy Undersecretary Meryl Harell and Congresswoman Nikema Williams.

Our Executive Director Grace Lee also introduced the kids to the magic of Buddy Bison, our loveable woolly mascot. She encouraged students to bring Buddy with them on any outdoor adventure and stressed the importance of enjoying and protecting our public lands and waters.

The Harlem Globetrotters then dazzled the audience with an impressive demonstration, showcasing their iconic skills and basketball tricks that left everyone cheering for more. The event wrapped up with a fantastic opportunity for the kids, who broke into groups for skills clinics where they could learn from the best. This event not only celebrated the spirit of play but also highlighted the importance of community involvement, encouraging kids to lead active, healthy lives.
