Military Families Make a Splash at Everglades National Park

In February 2024, military families embarked on an unforgettable adventure at Everglades National Park, kicking off this year’s series of outdoor experiences made possible by the National Park Trust, the National Park Service (NPS), and Our Military Kids. This ongoing collaboration brings together National Guard, Reserve, and post-9/11 combat-injured service members and their families for immersive experiences in national parks across the country.

The day began with a warm welcome from park rangers who introduced the families to the unique ecosystem of the Everglades. Families learned about the park’s vast wetlands, the importance of preserving this vital habitat, and the diverse species that call it home. Each family was presented with an Interagency Military Annual Pass, granting them free access to over 2,000 federal recreational sites for an entire year.

The group explored the park’s lush landscapes, trekking along winding boardwalks and shaded paths. Along the way, they encountered native wildlife, including wading birds, turtles, and even a few alligators basking in the sun. Guided by knowledgeable rangers, participants learned how the Everglades function as a slow-moving river, supporting one of the most intricate ecosystems in the world.
A highlight of the day was the wading experience, also known as a slough slog. Families geared up to walk directly through the swamp, surrounded by towering cypress trees and the gentle hum of nature. This hands-on adventure gave participants a true sense of the park’s beauty and resilience.

This event at Everglades National Park marks the first of several park adventures planned for 2025. Through these experiences, the National Park Trust, NPS, and Our Military Kids continue their commitment to supporting military families and fostering a lifelong love of national parks and conservation.
