Military Families Set Sail for Stellwagen Bank
On August 10, 2025, we hosted the second of five outings within the National Marine Sanctuary network, part of a nationwide initiative to connect military families with the wonders of our nation’s protected marine areas.
In partnership with the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and NOAA Fisheries, we welcomed active duty service members and veteran families for a day of hands-on education, wildlife discovery, and sustainable fishing off the coast of Massachusetts.

The day began dockside in Boston Harbor, where participants learned about the sanctuary’s incredible marine life. Programming included lessons on the whales that migrate through Stellwagen’s waters, the seabirds soaring above the Gulf of Maine, and the fish species that call the area home. These interactive sessions gave families a deeper understanding of the sanctuary’s biodiversity and the importance of protecting these vital ocean habitats.

With new knowledge and excitement in hand, the group boarded the Yankee Fleet and set out into the sanctuary for an afternoon of fishing. Lines hit the water, and soon participants were reeling in a variety of local species, sharing smiles, stories, and the joy of time spent together on the open sea.
As the boats returned to shore, families had their fresh catches cleaned and filleted, ready to take home and enjoy as a delicious reminder of the day’s adventure.

We are proud to work alongside these incredible partners to offer unique, meaningful outdoor experiences for our nation’s military communities. Outings like these not only connect families to our public waters but also help foster a lifelong appreciation for marine conservation and recreation.
