On June 15, 2025, National Park Trust partnered with the Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP), a nonprofit dedicated to connecting the military community through the arts. This special collaboration brought military families together for a creative and restorative experience in Shenandoah National Park, featuring photography, journaling, and watercolor workshops.

The day began at the Big Meadows Amphitheater, where families were warmly welcomed by park rangers who shared insights about the park’s significance and its role in supporting Virginia’s wildlife. The experience continued with guided journaling and watercolor painting, offering a chance to reflect, create, and unwind in nature.

Following the introduction, participants embarked on a ranger-led hike up the Bearfence Mountain Trail, culminating in breathtaking panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. After lunch, the group participated in a hands-on photography session, capturing the natural beauty surrounding them, including native plants and wildlife.

This event was designed to give military families an opportunity to enjoy Shenandoah’s stunning landscapes while merging the healing power of art and the outdoors. Research consistently shows that both artistic expression and time in nature can positively impact mental well-being. National Park Trust is proud to partner with organizations like ASAP to provide meaningful, creative outlets for military communities and to honor their service by connecting them to the public lands they’ve helped protect.
