On a calm, sunny morning in mid-November, we met at Lake Wauburg for an hour of SUP yoga on the water. Upon gathering, we secured our life jackets and had a quick orientation, and some laughs about balance (or lack thereof), then paddled out from shore and to the center of the lake. The water was glassy with minimal wind, and the quiet morning made perfect conditions to hone our balance on the boards and try something new.

Once we reached the middle of the lake, our lovely instructor, Jaiden, started us off with a speech about mindfulness and ‘choosing your own challenge’ with the session. Without paddleboard anchors, the gradual drift of the boards added an extra challenge, but it also made everything feel peaceful and grounding. Jaiden led us through wobbly warrior poses, steady breaths, and a closing savasana, and everyone found their rhythm. The sun kept us warm on an otherwise chilly morning, and the view of the shoreline and trees created a beautiful backdrop for the whole experience.

After we wrapped up the session, we paddled back at our own pace, chatting and enjoying the morning. Some students decided to stay and spend more time at Lake Wauburg—swimming, hanging out on the shore, or taking out more boats—while others headed off to continue their day, using the yoga as a refreshing start and a fun warm-up.

It was a simple, relaxing morning on the water, and a great way to connect with each other and the lake. It was everyone’s first time doing yoga on paddleboards, and everyone seemed to walk away with satisfaction and a sense of grounding from the ‘sidequest.’
