Overview

The National Park Service (NPS) contacted National Park Trust asking for help to facilitate the completion of two important land exchanges in Grand Teton National Park. Both of these exchanges will resolve long standing disputes and protect important park resources and visitor experiences.

Why This Place Matters

Grand Teton National Park, established in 1929, draws millions of visitors each year to experience its mountains, wildlife, and open landscapes. These land exchanges will help protect park habitats and ease road access issues.

Two Land Exchanges, One Goal: Protecting Grand Teton’s Landscape and Access

  • The Moulton exchange swaps a small piece of private land inside the park for a nearby piece of NPS land that already has road access. That means no new road has to be cut through sensitive habitat, protecting wildlife and preserving the scenic views visitors come to see.
  • The Sheahan exchange (Granite Canyon) settles a shared ownership issue along Moose Wilson Road, the park’s main entrance road. Resolving it means smoother, more reliable road access for the millions of visitors who enter through this route each year.

Significance of the Acquisition:
  • National Park Trust will play a crucial role in protecting important park resources and improving visitor experiences at an iconic national park.
  • Excellent demonstration of the value of the Park Trust’s Treasure Forever Fund.
