In April 2024, the National Park Service (NPS) requested our help to acquire property for inclusion in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Munising, Michigan.
Project Details:
Project Years: 2024
Parcel Size: 20 acres
Project Cost: $25,000
Park Trust Role: Buy and hold
Overview
NPS identified a 20-acre parcel of undeveloped land on the park’s western edge, near the town of Grand Marais. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the owner of the property, declared it surplus and put it up for public auction. NPS asked them if they could remove it from the auction and have it purchased for the park. They agreed and took it off the market.
We then contacted the DNR, asking about the opportunity to purchase the parcel to donate to the NPS. The DNR agreed and is holding the property pending purchase by the Park Trust.
Established in 1972, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore protects scenic sandstone cliffs, 300-foot dunes, and rocky beaches along Lake Superior. Inland, the boreal forest and wetlands are home to wildlife, including black bears, moose, bobcats, and grey wolves.
Why This Place Matters
The property is heavily wooded, undeveloped, and remote and is surrounded on three sides by parkland. Its purchase will eliminate an inholding, add land for public access, and protect more critical habitat for the park’s wildlife.
Significance of the Acquisition:
- Removes undeveloped land in the park from the open market, eliminating the possibility of development.
- Allows management of the property consistent with the surrounding parkland.
- Safeguards habitat for black bears, moose, bobcats, grey wolves, and other wildlife.
