In August 2024, the National Park Service requested our help acquiring property for inclusion in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Empire, Michigan.
Project Details:
Project Years: 2024 – Present
Parcel Size: 104.7 acres
Overview
The National Park Service identified 2 parcels of undeveloped land totaling 104.7 acres on the western edge of the park. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) decided the property was surplus to their needs. The NPS wants the property, which is inside the park. The properties lie along the Platte River, and on the shore of Little Platte Lake and Loon Lakes; both areas are popular and would be very susceptible to development.
The NPS has federal funds for the purchase, they are not allowed to buy property from the DNR. The Park Trust can ensure the property is environmentally clean, that the ownership records are correct, then buy the land, and sell it to the NPS.
The properties are heavily wooded, with mixed hardwoods and conifers. One is surrounded by park land, the other on three sides with a lakeshore development on the other.
Why This Place Matters
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, established in 1970, protects the scenic Lake Michigan shoreline, 460-foot dunes, inland forests, lighthouses, and historic U.S. Lifesaving Service stations. Whitetail deer, black bear, beaver, and coyotes are some of the animals that call the park home, and 240 species of birds have been seen there.
Significance of the Acquisition:
- – Removes undeveloped land in the park from the open market, eliminating the risk of development.
- – Allows management of the property consistent with the surrounding park land.
- – Protects lakeshore and riparian natural communities.
