Overview

At the request of the National Park Service (NPS), National Park Trust is assisting with the acquisition of an important inholding property within the boundaries of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

The property, known as Tract 21-120, encompasses approximately four acres and is bordered by National Park Service land on three sides and Big Glen Lake to the north. Featuring approximately 305 feet of pristine Big Glen Lake shoreline, it is one of only four remaining privately owned inholdings along a one-mile stretch of shoreline. Since 1970, the National Park Service has acquired dozens of similar properties within this area to protect the park’s natural and scenic resources.

This tract lies within one of the most iconic viewsheds in the National Lakeshore. From the nearby overlook known as “Inspiration Point,” visitors enjoy sweeping, unobstructed views of Glen Lake and the surrounding landscape. Acquiring this property would permanently preserve these scenic vistas, protect the local watershed, enhance public access along the ridge, and conserve valuable wildlife habitat found within its wooded landscape.

The property also includes approximately 550 linear feet of paved driveway in a horseshoe configuration, along with a guardrail and a stone bench. The National Park Service intends to retain these features to support visitor access, safety, and enjoyment of the area.

Because the National Park Service cannot purchase the property directly from the current owner, National Park Trust will serve as the acquisition partner. National Park Trust will purchase the property and subsequently transfer it to the National Park Service, ensuring this remarkable landscape is permanently protected for future generations.

Why This Place Matters

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, established in 1970, protects the scenic Lake Michigan shoreline, 460-foot dunes, inland forests, lighthouses, and historic U.S. Lifesaving Service stations. Whitetail deer, black bears, beavers, and coyotes are among the animals that call the park home, and 240 species of birds have been seen there.

Significance of the Acquisition:

  • National Park Trust will play a crucial role in preserving a great visitor experience and protecting public access.
  • This will help NPS protect a marquee experience in the park.
  • Excellent demonstration of the value of the Park Trust’s Treasure Forever Fund.
