On October 5th, 2024, students at Tennessee State University embraced the beauty of the outdoors with an unforgettable kayaking trip on the Duck River in Columbia, Tennessee, as part of the National Park Trust x HBCU Outside Program. With 20 participants, including three ambassadors, the group spent the day soaking up the sunshine, connecting with nature, and building bonds in one of the most scenic areas in the state.

For many students, this was their first time kayaking, and the experience offered the perfect way to unwind after the intensity of midterms. With clear skies and the peaceful flow of the river, it was the ideal setting for students to step away from campus life and immerse themselves in a new adventure.

Halfway through the kayaking journey, the group made a mid-river stop that became one of the most memorable moments of the day. Participants paused to collect mussels, take photos, and socialize—giving everyone a chance to bond over their shared experience. The stop offered time for relaxation and reflection, allowing participants to appreciate the river and the company of their peers.

This kayaking adventure was more than just a fun trip—it had a lasting impact on the participants. By offering an inclusive outdoor experience, it allowed students to build confidence, try something outside of their comfort zones, and connect with others who share their interests.
